Here’s another one of my favorite books: Gig: Americans Talk About Their Jobs. The book is just what it says it is—a book in which people talk about their jobs—and it is fascinating and engrossing and sometimes (in the case of the guy who cleans up after the deceased) just gross. In a good way, of course.

This page is about my gig.

Caroline Kettlewell: Journal

January 2005

Yes, well, once again here we are well past the middle of the month. I just had to get December off stage. It was getting ridiculous.

What I'm reading: Trawler by Redmond O'Hanlon. A lot of exclamation points! Maybe he didn't read my December journal entry! But then again, the events in the book apparently were carried on entirely at a shout in the midst of a Force 12 hurricane. Which brings me to the pithy quote from the book (as spoken by Jason, the captain, to Redmond O'Hanlon, who has shipped out Jason and his crew on a fishing trawler in January in the North Atlantic):

"Is this it? Is this a Force 12?" asks O'Hanlon.

"Aye," says Jason (not looking at O'Hanlon). "Maybe. Maybe not. Who cares? Only you! But I'll tell you this, Redmond. In my opinion, and please, feel free to disagree, I'd say it's a stormy, stormy night."

Interesting trivia moment from the book: the appearance of my surname! There was a Kettlewell who was a naturalist, and gets a mention on page 161. You may think this is not all that interesting a trivia moment, but it's not like my name is Smith, after all. (Although there is a Smith-Kettlewell eye institute.)
On my I-pod: nothing at the moment. I mean, besides music.
In the tape deck in my car: I recently finished Isaac's Storm. The timing disturbingly coincided with the tsunami tragedy. Next I'm moving on to John McPhee's Coming into the Country. Currently working through the Lemony Snicket oeuvre as well, with the junior member of this household.
